What Section Should I Register For?
While the numbering system for courses is straightforward (EMIS 1000-5999 for undergraduate, EMIS 7000-8999 for graduate courses), the numbering scheme for sections is not obvious, especially for graduate classes.
Here is the section numbering conventions for classes in the Lyle School of Engineering:
Section

|
301

Hence, if you are a graduate student who will take a course on the SMU campus, register for section 001, 301, or 701. If you prefer to take the same
course via distance education, enroll in section 401, 418, or 498, depending on your location or military status.
Occasionally, executive-format classes are listed in access.smu.edu (sections 795). Such sections are restricted to students admitted to the particular class and are not available for registration by other students.
When registering for graduate dissertation and thesis courses (EMIS 7x96 and EMIS 8x96), the section number denotes the advisor, as follows:

What Are the Term/Semester Codes?
On some forms, there is a numeric code for the semester that a class was taken or will be offered. For example: Term 0714. The coding is:
1yyt where yy = year, t = 2 (Spring), 4 (Summer), or 7 (Fall)
Hence, Term 1114 is Summer, 2011.
