4+1 Program Requirements (Revised 2003)

For students admitted to the 4+1 Program, up to nine (9) SCH of graduate courses (7000-level and above) may be applied towards the student’s undergraduate program requirements.

Admission Requirements

For admission to the 4+1 Program, the student must:

  1. Be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the Lyle School of Engineering,
  2. Have achieved junior-level status,
  3. Apply no later than one year prior to the time they would graduate with a B.S. degree,
  4. Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher,
  5. Have three letters of recommendation, one from the student’s academic advisor and two from other faculty members in Lyle Engineering, and
  6. Be accepted into the desired M.S. program.

Masters Degree Requirements

To receive a masters degree under the 4+1 Program, the student must:

  1. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the M.S. degree course work (including the graduate course work applied towards the undergraduate degree requirements),
  2. Complete a minimum of 21 term-credit hours of graduate course work at SMU beyond the undergraduate residency requirement to satisfy the graduate residency requirement, and
  3. Have satisfied all other requirements for the B.S. and M.S. degrees.
