Executive MSIEM Executive Program Organization

Executive Program Organization FAQ

  • What degree will I receive?
A Masters of Science in Information Engineering and Management
  • What are the degree requirements?
The MSIEM is a 30-hour degree (require ten three-semester-hour courses). See the respective program description.
  • Where will the classes be held?
Class I was held SMU’s Legacy campus in Plano, Texas (5228 Tennyson Parkway). Others may be held at other locations.
  • When will the classes start?
Classes will start in August of each year.
  • How long does the executive program take to complete?
    Two calendar years.
  • What is the executive program’s class schedule?
Assuming an August start date, a typical schedule of classes will be:
    • August, Year 1: Orientation, one-week introductory course
    • Fall Semester and Spring Semester, Year 1: Monthly all-day Friday and Saturday sessions
    • Summer Year 1: One course (dates vary)
    • Fall-Spring, Year 2: Monthly all-day Friday and Saturday sessions
    • Summer Year 2: One course (dates vary)
    • August, Year 2: SMU Graduation

  • What are the differences between the Executive Masters and the standard Masters programs?
Primarily scheduling format and teaching style. A group of students are admitted as a class and complete the program together, all taking the same classes. Classes are taught either in a single five-day summer session or pair wise over five Friday-Saturday sessions over as many months. This scheduling will give students the same number of class hours as in traditionally delivered three-hour courses. Instructors’ teaching styles will more interactive and less lecture-listen in this extended-session format. Some instructors may use more case-study or other experiential teaching approaches; others may have in-class exercises and group activities. Otherwise, in terms of the courses taught and material covered, there is no difference between the executive-format and traditional-format degree programs.
  • What other schools offer an executive track in engineering?
Only the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Both of these programs were developed and implemented by SMU’s Dean of Engineering, Dr. Steven Szygenda, and are quite successful. Neither of these schools offers both the MSEM and MSIEM degrees in the executive format.
  • Will there be any international trips required/offered during the two-year program?
    Not at this time.
  • Can these programs be customized for on-site delivery?
Yes. Please contact the EMIS department chair for details (Dr. Richard Barr, 214-768-1100).
