Executive MSIEM Organization of Classes

Organization of Classes FAQ

  1. How are classes organized?
Most classes are taught over five monthly Friday-Saturday sessions. Summer courses are taught in a more condensed format.
  2. How many students are in a class?
At least 20 and no more than 30. Our experience has found that classes with fewer than 20 students do not work well for team assignments and in classroom dynamics. With more than 30 students, there is a significant impact on class intimacy, student interactions, and individual contribution. Hence, we will not start a class with fewer than 20, nor more than 30, qualified applicants.
  3. How can I learn more about course content?
See the Engineering Management, Information, and Systems (EMIS) department web site’s course descriptions
  4. Will there be any orientation classes?
There will be orientation sessions as a part of the first week of classes.
  5. Which courses are taken concurrently?
These are determined based on a natural progression of courses, instructor availability, and a desire for diversity of topics in a given semester.
  6. In a given semester, will Course A be given on Fridays and Course B on Saturdays, or will they each be given half on Fridays and half on Saturdays?
One course is taught on Fridays and the other on Saturdays.
  7. How many clock hours are scheduled per course?
As many as in a traditionally delivered class: approximately 40 contact hours.
  8. How will mid-term and final exams be administered?
This is left to the discretion of the individual instructor.
  9. What types of course projects will students engage in?
This also is left to the discretion of the individual instructor.
  10. Will I be in a class with “executives” or “aspiring executives?”
Probably both. Classes are expected to have students with a range of age, experience, and company size. Some will be from larger organizations, others from smaller businesses. Students are as much a part of the educational process as the faculty, with each learning from the other. We have found that diversity in participants’ backgrounds and situations greatly enhances the learning process.
  11. How will the faculty selected for the executive program differ from those providing instruction for the non-executive degree tracks?
Many will be the same faculty, although their teaching approaches may differ significantly from those used in the non-executive program, which is offered on campus and by videotape.
  12. What percentage of your faculty has industry experience?
Most of the faculty are either in industry now or have significant industrial experience.
  13. Can I miss one semester and make it up later?
No. Classes go through the program together as a group. If circumstances cause you to drop out, you can transfer to the non-executive degree program to take the remaining classes for your degree.
  14. If a class size goes below 20 because of dropouts, will the class be canceled?
No. Once an executive class is begun, it will be run to completion.
  15. Can I transfer courses previously taken to count towards this degree?
No. An executive-program class must take all ten courses together.
  16. Can I choose my own electives?
No. All students in a given executive class will take the same set of classes.
